Wilderness at your backyard
While living in the middle of snow and winter almost 8 months of year you keep forgeting that it is something that most people in the world do not have around them. Another thing you forget while living in Geilo is that the nature begins in your backyard. I noticed this one more time once we went out to look for a good spot for xc-ski touring trip that me, my colleague Jeff and my boyfriend Antti will be guiding at the end of April and beginning of May.
On our short test skiing we happened to see an owl and many willow grouses even though we were only 15 minutes away from a parking lot, that is located in about 20 minutes car drive from home. Today the temperature went for the first time over +5 degrees in Geilo since December. We have had amazing winter this year with constant snow falls and it still keeps going. It is too early to say how fast the snow will melt in here, but most probably there will still be snow in Geilo in May. Last year with much less snow the first real mountain biking rides were done at the end of May.
For many years ago I studied at the university the seasonality of tourism. At the moment I’m feeling it. The Easter holiday is going to be one of the busiest times of year in ski resort business. After Easter the winter season is mostly over in business vice. We are trying to promote already the tours for the summer. This summer our goal is to offer some guided tours by electric bikes, mountain bikes and by foot. Still your own head is totally on winter and even after the ski school season you are waiting for your own ski holiday in the north of Norway. So while some others are already getting on their mountain bikes and kayaks somewhere else I will be skiing for a while.
Being a sports instructor or a wilderness guide all year round has been my goal. This summer we will give a try for it. I hope that people will find out there way to Geilo also in summer. You can find the tours that we offer in summer of www.geilo365.no websites and the organizers name is Haugastøl Turistsenter.
