This was my very first toptur (toptur is norwegian name for hikes up to the mountains) in Geilo at the end of nowember. Snow was bad. There was enough snow for skiing, without hitting the rocks, but it was far from optimal soft snow. It was quite wet and heavy snow, but I wanted to get around a bit in the new home hill.
I started to make my own track behind the liftstation in Geiloheisen. Suprisingly I realized that this was also my very first randonnee alone in Norway. Before I had always had at least one friend with me. Well the area is so flat that there isn’t avalanche risk at the moment with so little snow as well. Still it was a different kind of feeling of skiing by yourself. Because it came colder and we got no news snow in the following days I could see my track many days after in the snow.
Longer away there was some cross country skiers, but other than that you could only meet some birds. During the week Geilo seems to be pretty quiet place. I skied a bit more than an hour to the closest top. It was cloudy in the beginning, but once I got to the top sun came out. For a little while it felt like spring winter. Got few telemark turns on my way back eventhough there wasn’t much to do with downhill skiing this time.
Some people hate this village because of it is surrounded by little mountains. But I definitely like the view of my new home place. Next week I got back to the same top with snow shoes with my boyfriend. Skiing was impossible because very hard wind took away much of the snow. Now we are waiting for more snow to come, to explore more.
